Metropolia has not taken actions preventing climate change into account in its strategy

Let's demand sustainable development and responsibility to Metropolia's next strategy!

Petition

In its strategy for 2020 Metropolia University of Applied Sciences has stated that it will be a bold reformer of expertise and an active builder of the future. Although growing concern over climate change has challenged organizations to take action, there is no mention of sustainable development in Metropolia’s strategy. Metropolia has cut several sustainable development projects due to claimed cost issues.

As a forerunner, Metropolia should lead the way towards a cleaner future, alongside other big educational organizations in Finland.

We who have signed this petition demand that:

  1. Metropolia should adopt sustainable development in its strategy and that it should purposefully enforce environment-friendly approach in all of its operations.
  2. Metropolia should reinstate an organizational-level environment team that would be responsible for taking sustainable development into account across all Metropolia’s operations.
  3. Metropolia should create a long-term plan for promoting sustainable development.
  4. Metropolia should state how it will take climate and environment into account both in its operations as well as in the education it is offering. Metropolia should communicate this clearly to its students.

Many Finnish universities and universities of applied sciences have adopted climate change and sustainable development as themes in their strategies. Metropolia has not done so.

Metropolia University of Applied Sciences should not remain a bystander in what has become a great challenge in our lifetime. Metropolia should take quick action in preventing the climate change.

What is Greener Metropolia?

Greener Metropolia is student-driven campaign that aims to raise awareness about Metropolia’s actions on environment and climate issues. It also aims to affect Metropolia’s policy on these matters. The campaign is based on research done by second year students in Metropolia’s Digital Media degree programme.

Greener Metropolia is also a petition campaign. With the petition the aim is to demonstrate Metropolia students’ will to have more sustainable and more responsible Metropolia.

The petition will be handed over to the school executives in May 2019.

What do we want to change?

As an educator of future professionals and as the biggest university of applied sciences in Finland it is essential that Metropolia actively promotes sustainability, responsibility and environment-friendliness.

We want Metropolia to quickly modify its approach to environment and climate issues and to immediately take sustainable development as visible part of its actions. The importance of these matters should be stressed in Metropolia’s next strategy.

What is Metropolia doing now?

Metropolia is the largest university of applied sciences in Finland but has not taken actions preventing climate change into account in its current strategy. Responsibility is not mentioned in the strategy at all.

Metropolia has also abandoned some sustainable development projects due to costs. Metropolia has no team or person dedicated to organisation’s environmental responsibility. Sustainable development is not stressed sufficiently on a curriculum level. Recycling in campuses is inadequate.

A research carried out by second year students in Metropolia’s Digital media degree programme reveals that many students assume that Metropolia acts responsibly and promotes environment-friendly approaches in its actions.

According to the research, many students would like to see more recycling options at campuses. Students would also like to have more emphasis on environment issues and sustainable development in during courses.

Climate change

Climate change caused by human activities is one of the most central factors that has caused many species to become endangered or extinct. IPCC (The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) released a report in October 2018 assessing effects of 1.5°C global warming. According to the report, warming at this rate would endanger at least 20% of all species – 60% of vertebrate species have become extinct 1970-2012.

If global warming reaches 2.0°C most ecosystems will collapse. Rapid melting of glaciers may lead to shortages of drinking water, a threat that would affect billions of people in the future. Extreme weather conditions would become more intense and occur more often.
